Brain Computer Interfaces (BCIs) are a rapidly developing neurotechnology allowing bidirectional interfacing of the brain with external computational devices. Frontier companies such as Neuralink promise to solve medical challenges today and ‘unlock human potential tomorrow’. In this session I will give a short introduction to BCI technologies, with a focus on the use of BCIs for cognitive enhancement. I will survey these issues from the perspective of consciousness research and will highlight some of the ethical issues arising. This introduction will be followed by time for open discussion.
