The United Nations has designated 2025 International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. In this masterclass we will explore what the fuss is all about. It will be both a look back at the past 100 years of quantum mechanics as well as a look forward to the future of quantum technologies, from quantum computing to quantum sensing and quantum communication. The basic science of what these technologies will be able to do will be outlined, touching on such mind-bending concepts as superposition, entanglement and decoherence to explain why we don’t yet have a fully working quantum computer. We will also explore the exciting new field of quantum biology; has evolution found a way of utilising quantum magic, and can we learn from it to advance these new technologies?
